Persona 4 Fan Fiction
1 More Chance!
In early 2009, the videogame “Shin Megami Tensei Persona 4”, by game developer Atlus, stole over 100 hours of my life. It also stole a little piece of my heart.
The game follows mostly-silent protagonist Seta Souji/Narukami Yu, but I identified with high-kicking girl sidekick Satonaka Chie. Chie was a tomboy. She trained hard. She fought monsters to protect her friends. She ate steak like a wolverine. And she bullied the boy she liked because she wasn’t confident enough to just be herself around him, and let herself be open to her tenderer emotions. At least, that was the way I played it.
From 2009 until 2012 or so, the characters of P4 took over my imagination, prompting me to write the massive serial “1 More Chance!”. This story is the centerpiece of my version of events that take place about 5 years after the end of the game (2017-2018). It focuses on Chie and her relationships with her friends and family, but everyone has a role and a subplot, if you look hard enough.
1 More Chance! Warnings
1 More Chance! is out-of-control long – it’s over 1000 pages. I could get that to a more reasonable number with some editing (which the story certainly could use)…but I wrote it as a kind of prose-manga, designed to be consumed in pieces over a long period of time. The characters are also quite sexual. I debated going back and softening some of those scenes, but as with all of my older stories, I decided that it is what it is and who was I to pass judgment on my younger, more indulgent self?
Other P4 stories
1 More Chance! occupies center stage in my P4 universe, but it is not alone. I wrote a few stories focused on some of the other characters. A few hits, a few misses, and a lot in-between. Use the links to check them out while I work on getting 1 More Chance! ready for reading again.

1000 Words : The kanji for her name means 1000 Words, but for Yousuke, even that’s not enough to fully describe Satonaka.
Firebrand : It doesn’t much matter, in the end. End of term, 2012, and Yukiko and Souji on the rooftop of Yasogami High.
I Can’t : They say it so many times, they can almost believe it. Kanji and Rise.
The Unhidden Truth : Rise is a liar. Naoto knows this.
Run : Ai never ran anywhere, until it was too late.
100-Word Challenge: Pretty Princess
So, it's week 54 for Julia's 100-Word Challenge for Grown-Ups, and we've got a relatively simple prompt: LEGACY. Julia says, You don’t have to ... include the word but I would like 100 words on what it says to you. Legacy always conjures up the idea and ramifications...
Getting to know you [Fearless]
As much as I enjoy delving into the heady depths of a good romance, one of my favorite parts of examining relationships is the dance of early affection between two characters. While not necessarily innocent (especially from a player's point of view), it's often full...
Linking with WordPress
Linking with WordPress is quite easy...once you know what to do. If you're familiar with HTML, you can use the "Text" option in the "Add New Post" window. But, most bloggers are likely just typing in the "Visual" tab. For those of you who don't want to deal with href...
My Dos
I follow a lot of people on Twitter. Most of them, I follow for fun: they're insightful, amusing, friendly folk. But some are on my "understanding the business of writing" list: agents, editors, writers, publishers. Some of these people offer the same insightful,...
100-Word Challenge: One More Night
For week 53 of the 100-Word Challenge for Grown-ups, Julia has given us a specific text prompt: … would seven prove to be too much? ….. As usual, you have 100 words to add to these 7 making 107 in total to produce your piece. I tamed things down a bit from my initial...
A “thing” called radar love
While listening to the radio the other day, "Radar Love" by Golden Earring came on. Now, this is admittedly a very fun driving song, but it's not driving soundtracks I'm discussing in this post. [youtube...
100-Word Challenge: Fire Dancers
For week 51 of the 100-Word Challenge for Grown-Ups, the prompt is, simply: ...together the flames... We have 100 words to produce a creative piece from the prompt. It doesn't say we have to use those words exactly, but I did, as you'll see. "Fire Dancers" They'd...
“Your hero’s a jerk.” [Fearless]
A friend of mine asked to read my latest project, which happens to be Fearless. I don't usually share my work with people I trust so early in the game, but I offered him the first two (draft) chapters, mostly just to shut him up. It didn't. What I got back was an...
Are we Human? Or are we Storyteller?
With apologies to The Killers. The history of human communication is an interesting one, from an anthropological perspective. The idea that people told each other stories - to stave off the demons in the dark (or to bring them to life), to explain their visions in the...
100-Word Challenge: No Way Back
This week is week 51 over at the 100-Word Challenge for Grown-Ups (WCGU). As Julia says: The prompt this week is another simple one: …. the line was drawn …. As always you have an additional 100 words to add to these 4 making 104 in total. Last week, I dabbled in a...
