The story is about honesty. It’s about trust. It’s about redemption and finding strength within oneself, both physical and emotional. It’s about how people sometimes get sucked down into life’s wild and random undertow…and how some of them can still get up again even when they do. But most of all, the story is about love: the love that exists between friends who support each other and are willing to call one another on their shit; the love between family who are willing to protect each other even to the point of blindness; and – especially – the love that exists between lovers who are searching for someone to hold onto, both in the cold, clutching night and the warm, bright day.
I’ve written many stories over my life. Some of them were just for the fun, others were for the challenge, still others were because I wanted to make an impression. None of them have I enjoyed imagining and writing so much as this one, though. It might not end up being my most powerful, my most popular, or even my best work. But it’s been the most true, in its people and their feelings, their failures and their successes.
And that’s made it worth it.
Recycling the family tree
So, as some folks know, I'm writing this sci-fi western story based on a videogame universe. Blah blah blah, I know, it's fan fiction and not real writing, whatever. I'm still having a blast with it, and just one of the reasons why is it's given me a new perspective...
What makes a good man?
(Mostly recycling from Tumblr again, because, after a long week spent helping care for my dad, who's still going through chemo, I just don't have the energy to put forth a completely new post.) In a recent post over at Kourtney Heintz's Journal, Kourtney brought up...
Voices, and a critique revisited
A few weeks ago, I put up on the blog an excerpt of a fight scene I was having trouble with. Based on your feedback, I made some changes to the text, ones I hope create a smoother experience for the reader. Do they or don't they? I'll let you be the judge. (Clicking...
Love and Marriage, for all
Overnight station shifts often meant solitude while he waited for a call to come in, a trial Scott considered a lonely necessity at its best and a nerve-wracking tedium at its worst. Some of the other men on the squad appreciated the quiet away from wives and...
Dissecting video
A few weeks ago, the fine folks over at Limebird Writers celebrated their first anniversary. To commemorate, they had a contest with a bunch of fantabulous prizes that would make any aspiring writer's quill quiver with eager excitement, mine included. My video didn't...
Spot On [Fearless]
The other day, I couldn't get a scene to work. This happens on a lot of days, actually, but this particular one was just grinding away at me. It was so frustrating, I wanted to just throw my laptop across the room and give up, say, To Hell with it, and let the story...
100-Word Challenge: No Way Back
This week is week 51 over at the 100-Word Challenge for Grown-Ups (WCGU). As Julia says: The prompt this week is another simple one: …. the line was drawn …. As always you have an additional 100 words to add to these 4 making 104 in total. Last week, I dabbled in a...
100-Word Challenge: Neither Hell nor High Water
It's Week 50 for the 100-Word Challenge for Grown-Ups! I've only been participating for twenty weeks (you can read my entry for Week 31 here), but I feel like I've really learned a lot - and grown as a storyteller - in even that short amount of time, so I'm so...
Happiness and Sorrow
I freely admit it: I like the happy. Many stories dwell on the conflicts that arise from anger, misery, and hate. Those can be very powerful stories, as they resonate with men and women who have felt those same emotions in their own lives. I enjoy those stories, too,...
Fade to Black (The Sex Scene)
Warning: I've tried to keep it clean, but discussion of mature themes to follow. “It's been a while, hasn't it?” Venus guessed. “Since you two have...been together?” Ross paused, hand hovering over the electric kettle. “A bit,” he admitted. She offered him a slow nod,...
