Persona 4 Fan Fiction
1 More Chance!
In early 2009, the videogame “Shin Megami Tensei Persona 4”, by game developer Atlus, stole over 100 hours of my life. It also stole a little piece of my heart.
The game follows mostly-silent protagonist Seta Souji/Narukami Yu, but I identified with high-kicking girl sidekick Satonaka Chie. Chie was a tomboy. She trained hard. She fought monsters to protect her friends. She ate steak like a wolverine. And she bullied the boy she liked because she wasn’t confident enough to just be herself around him, and let herself be open to her tenderer emotions. At least, that was the way I played it.
From 2009 until 2012 or so, the characters of P4 took over my imagination, prompting me to write the massive serial “1 More Chance!”. This story is the centerpiece of my version of events that take place about 5 years after the end of the game (2017-2018). It focuses on Chie and her relationships with her friends and family, but everyone has a role and a subplot, if you look hard enough.
1 More Chance! Warnings
1 More Chance! is out-of-control long – it’s over 1000 pages. I could get that to a more reasonable number with some editing (which the story certainly could use)…but I wrote it as a kind of prose-manga, designed to be consumed in pieces over a long period of time. The characters are also quite sexual. I debated going back and softening some of those scenes, but as with all of my older stories, I decided that it is what it is and who was I to pass judgment on my younger, more indulgent self?
Other P4 stories
1 More Chance! occupies center stage in my P4 universe, but it is not alone. I wrote a few stories focused on some of the other characters. A few hits, a few misses, and a lot in-between. Use the links to check them out while I work on getting 1 More Chance! ready for reading again.

Each link will take you to a standalone post for these stories.
1000 Words : The kanji for her name means 1000 Words, but for Yousuke, even that’s not enough to fully describe Satonaka.
Firebrand : It doesn’t much matter, in the end. End of term, 2012, and Yukiko and Souji on the rooftop of Yasogami High.
I Can’t : They say it so many times, they can almost believe it. Kanji and Rise.
The Unhidden Truth : Rise is a liar. Naoto knows this.
Run : Ai never ran anywhere, until it was too late.
The Devil’s in the Deity
Last Friday's Free Write Friday prompt from Kellie Elmore was the below photo: What struck me about the photo was not so much the twister itself or the girl in the foreground, but the way people's lives can often feel like they're caught in a storm. And, how lonely...
Nothing is Sacred
Knowing how to write dialogue is an important tool for a writer. Even more important, though, I'd wager, is being able to write believable dialogue. Countless articles and books have been written on the subject, but the same advice always crops up: Pay attention and...
The lost art of conversation. [FSF]
This week, Lillie McFerrin's prompt for her Five Sentence Fiction challenge is "WORDS." I went a few different ways with this prompt, at first...though, my initial flash fiction idea - while based on a true story - pushed the vulgarity a bit too much than I like to do...
The giving chain
I'm a terrible blogger. In the last several months, I've been nominated for some very sweet awards, and it's taken me forever to post them! Here they are: I was nominated for these awards by: JM McDowell (Dragon's Loyalty Award), who runs http://jmmcdowell.com/, a...
Relief and Shame
I'm back to Julia's 100-Word Challenges for Grown-Ups. This week, the prompt has a bit of an Easter theme to it: ...looking at all of that chocolate.... We're not required to incorporate the exact phrase in this challenge's 100 words, but I did, because it evokes such...
Of silence, sound, and rhythm
Most folks likely didn't notice, but I was away last week, "away" meaning cramped into an editing suite, poring over timecode and doing frame extraction. I'm back again, but last week's work has stayed with me. Mostly, because editing video always makes me think of...
Alternate Realities
No new original fiction, this week. Instead, an older 100-word post I did on my own, for my Songbirds. "Alternate Realities" Armed with an arsenal of books, pamphlets, and websites, Larry thought himself ready for anything Katie might throw at him: from the logistics...
I never meant to kill her.
I hadn't meant to kill her. I certainly didn't start out the day planning for it to happen. I didn't even know it was happening, until I looked at what I'd wrought, and realized she was dead. Somewhere deep down, though, I knew: it had to happen. I'd been waiting for...
“Enough to Last” [Five Sentence Fiction]
"Enough to Last" The high-pitched strains of concerto violins singing from the stereo in the corner. The slow-motion flutter of gossamer chiffon to the floor. The muted patter of raindrops against the window, tapping as though to be let in as witnesses to their dance....
I’ll Show You Mine
Recently, I handed off a scene from last year's NaNoWriMo to a professional editor. It was a nerve-wracking experience. Now, I've shared my stories with others before: friends, writing buddies, family (once in a while), even strangers. I don't stress about feedback...
