Persona 4 Fan Fiction
1 More Chance!
In early 2009, the videogame “Shin Megami Tensei Persona 4”, by game developer Atlus, stole over 100 hours of my life. It also stole a little piece of my heart.
The game follows mostly-silent protagonist Seta Souji/Narukami Yu, but I identified with high-kicking girl sidekick Satonaka Chie. Chie was a tomboy. She trained hard. She fought monsters to protect her friends. She ate steak like a wolverine. And she bullied the boy she liked because she wasn’t confident enough to just be herself around him, and let herself be open to her tenderer emotions. At least, that was the way I played it.
From 2009 until 2012 or so, the characters of P4 took over my imagination, prompting me to write the massive serial “1 More Chance!”. This story is the centerpiece of my version of events that take place about 5 years after the end of the game (2017-2018). It focuses on Chie and her relationships with her friends and family, but everyone has a role and a subplot, if you look hard enough.
1 More Chance! Warnings
1 More Chance! is out-of-control long – it’s over 1000 pages. I could get that to a more reasonable number with some editing (which the story certainly could use)…but I wrote it as a kind of prose-manga, designed to be consumed in pieces over a long period of time. The characters are also quite sexual. I debated going back and softening some of those scenes, but as with all of my older stories, I decided that it is what it is and who was I to pass judgment on my younger, more indulgent self?
Other P4 stories
1 More Chance! occupies center stage in my P4 universe, but it is not alone. I wrote a few stories focused on some of the other characters. A few hits, a few misses, and a lot in-between. Use the links to check them out while I work on getting 1 More Chance! ready for reading again.

1000 Words : The kanji for her name means 1000 Words, but for Yousuke, even that’s not enough to fully describe Satonaka.
Firebrand : It doesn’t much matter, in the end. End of term, 2012, and Yukiko and Souji on the rooftop of Yasogami High.
I Can’t : They say it so many times, they can almost believe it. Kanji and Rise.
The Unhidden Truth : Rise is a liar. Naoto knows this.
Run : Ai never ran anywhere, until it was too late.
A little breathing room
September seems to be a popular birthday month. It must have something to do with cuddling together when it's cold outside during the traditional winter. I celebrated my birthday this past week, too. While I may not have been able to celebrate with everyone I would...
My Masking Face
I'd meant to write a post about keeping balance in our lives, especially as writers, since many of us spend a lot of time sitting sequestered away in front of a computer. I was going to advise keeping a good exercise regime (I try to do 20-30 minutes every morning,...
A moment of writerly hubris
I think all writers are protective of their characters. We're told to kill our darlings, and the idea of making our characters face hardships, including death, is important, because conflict drives a lot of life. It certainly drives drama. As much as I love talking...

I want that love, that life
This is not a real post. I was going to talk about keeping balance in my writerly life, but I can't manage it right now. This was a rough week all around - at work, at home, in my head - and I just needed to take a break with people who care for and about each other,...
Love and Death and Love Again
I think about death a lot. Not mine, so much, because there's little point in that. I try to eat well, exercise, look both ways before crossing the street, that sort of thing. Beyond that, we're all basically at the mercy of fate, and stressing over when my time will...
My Sweetest Rejection
In my freshman year at university, I loved a boy. He wasn't particularly handsome, suave, or heroic. But, he had a rolling laugh, and bright, clear eyes, and a smile that would jump eagerly to his face, even for things I had said. And, I wasn't handsome, suave, or...
First Choices [includes yet another “Finding Mister Wright” free write]
Writing has a lot to do with first choices. We write from the tips of our fingers, trying to get down all the words running in our heads. When we sit back and take a read through what's on the paper or screen, we can start to second-guess those words. I've written...

“Storytelling is everything.”
I just got back from a work conference on television technology and production (that's my day job). I had a great time, as I always do, connecting and reconnecting with colleagues from across the country, and learning new lessons from faculty, staff, and students...
