The prompt for this week’s 100-Word Challenge for Grown-Ups is “Ruby,” to celebrate the 40th week of this challenge.
We have 100 words to fulfill the prompt, and – while my idea is pretty cheesy – I hope that you enjoy my take. π
“Precious Promises”
Amid riffling chiffon, she presses back against the door. It clicks, and she smiles.
He turns, tails flapping. βYou shouldn’t be here-!β
Three strides, and she’s in his arms, silencing him with a kiss that makes him hum…and leaves a ruby smear across his lips.
βSorry!β she laughs, and starts to thumb the smirch away.
He doesn’t laugh, though, but holds her tight. βPromise you’ll still kiss me like that after today?β
The question’s as important now as it will be in an hour. So is her answer. So she rises, seeking his smudged lips again, and whispers, βI do.β
I know that most of what I write with these 100-word challenges are fluff. But, I think, subconsciously, I need to be writing fluff, right now. I’m in the middle of a first draft novel that has a lot of heavy emotional drama in it, and I find these lighter-toned pieces of simple love and family life to be cathartic.
As for the doodle, I did a quick, small sketch in my pad during my train commute, and just had to flesh it out. It’s tiny, so there isn’t a tremendous amount of detail, which makes it quite cartoon-y. But I had much fun drawing and coloring something so simple with my Prismacolors.
So, how did you interpret this prompt? π
Fluff has it’s place, it made me smile, that is a win right there! If it helps you staying focused whilst you work through the drama that is an added bonus. Good luck with the novel.
Fluff is good. It makes for variety. I loved the way you caught that action of thumbing the lipstick away – very graphic.
Fluff is good, fluff makes the world go around. Warm hearted piece and totally understand your motivation for writing something light.
oooh interesting as to why he is worried she wont kiss him after π love the piccy!!!
Thank you, Juliette! Sometimes, we need the fluffiness to make it through the day. π
Thank you, Sandra. That one action is rather what made this moment stand out for me, as well. Glad you enjoyed it! π
Thanks, Older Mum! Even though I know it’s right for me, it’s always nice to hear that I’m being given a free pass, too. π
Thank you, Jenny! I think everyone worries that marriage will lead to a dampening of that pre-wedding passion. And it does, a little bit…but it’s compensated in other wonderful ways. π
I usually spend a lot more time on coloring, but, with this one, I really enjoyed just scratching out some quick lines.
Thanks again!
Fluff is fine especially as I’m reading this late at night.
There’s nothing wrong with ‘fluff’ it makes the world go round, this is lovely!
Thanks, Singlemum. π I always appreciate fluff, myself, but I know that lots of folks also look for meat in these challenges.
Thank you, Gilly! That’s great to hear, especially from someone whose work I enjoy and admire. π
That brought a smile to my lips. We need to read more fluff, fill our newspapers with it.
Thank you, Miriam!
You know, I rather agree with that. More fluff in the world might make for a slow news day…but a good one.
Love the story – love the picture. I wish I could draw like that! Your writing isn’t “fluff” – it’s light-hearted (there’s a difference) – and it’s necessary. You need light-hearted alongside the heavy drama for a bit of contrast. I really enjoyed this.
Mayumi, there is always room for some fluff, and I don’t think you overdid it at all. This is such a sweet moment, and I could easily picture them. It made me smile inside, and isn’t that the best thinkg about fluff? π
Thank you, Sally-Jayne. That totally made me feel better about my choice. π
Thanks, Judee. I agree that it’s often nice to portray some simple joy in writing. After all, we control what happens, so why not make some happiness? π
A lovely warm hearted piece.
Thank you, Susan. π
Aww, that’s sweet and I love the ‘doodle.’ π
Thank you, snagglewordz!
I’m glad that others are enjoying these as much as I enjoy creating them. π
There are no rules about fluff or no fluff or any other type of writing. I really enjoyed this & know lots of brides who will associate with it! Thank you for joining up with 100WCGU!
Thank you, Julia. π I have so enjoyed my time with the 100WCGU folks…and learned so much! I hope that I can be just as supportive and helpful, too. π
