Persona 4 Fan Fiction
1 More Chance!
In early 2009, the videogame “Shin Megami Tensei Persona 4”, by game developer Atlus, stole over 100 hours of my life. It also stole a little piece of my heart.
The game follows mostly-silent protagonist Seta Souji/Narukami Yu, but I identified with high-kicking girl sidekick Satonaka Chie. Chie was a tomboy. She trained hard. She fought monsters to protect her friends. She ate steak like a wolverine. And she bullied the boy she liked because she wasn’t confident enough to just be herself around him, and let herself be open to her tenderer emotions. At least, that was the way I played it.
From 2009 until 2012 or so, the characters of P4 took over my imagination, prompting me to write the massive serial “1 More Chance!”. This story is the centerpiece of my version of events that take place about 5 years after the end of the game (2017-2018). It focuses on Chie and her relationships with her friends and family, but everyone has a role and a subplot, if you look hard enough.
1 More Chance! Warnings
1 More Chance! is out-of-control long – it’s over 1000 pages. I could get that to a more reasonable number with some editing (which the story certainly could use)…but I wrote it as a kind of prose-manga, designed to be consumed in pieces over a long period of time. The characters are also quite sexual. I debated going back and softening some of those scenes, but as with all of my older stories, I decided that it is what it is and who was I to pass judgment on my younger, more indulgent self?
Other P4 stories
1 More Chance! occupies center stage in my P4 universe, but it is not alone. I wrote a few stories focused on some of the other characters. A few hits, a few misses, and a lot in-between. Use the links to check them out while I work on getting 1 More Chance! ready for reading again.

Each link will take you to a standalone post for these stories.
1000 Words : The kanji for her name means 1000 Words, but for Yousuke, even that’s not enough to fully describe Satonaka.
Firebrand : It doesn’t much matter, in the end. End of term, 2012, and Yukiko and Souji on the rooftop of Yasogami High.
I Can’t : They say it so many times, they can almost believe it. Kanji and Rise.
The Unhidden Truth : Rise is a liar. Naoto knows this.
Run : Ai never ran anywhere, until it was too late.
My giant leap forward
I did manage one post for June (my flipping the coin villain backstory post), but the rest of the month was a wash, blog-wise. But, I did have some excitement. Drumroll, please.... My husband read one of my stories! Some of you out there are likely thinking,...
Flipping the coin
Last time, I talked about writing villains. Everybody had great comments, but Vanessa's sparked a new idea in me. In my head (sometimes on paper), I have backstories for every character who walks onto my pages for any more than a sentence or two. Most of these...
Enemies, Enemies, Everywhere
Recently, I had an interesting dialogue with a writer friend on Twitter. He'd looked through my sci-fi/western/drama/romance and mentioned how "graphic" it is. I agreed that it's probably "the most gleefully graphic I've let myself get in a long time." Our...
What value prayer? (Bonus: Another “Finding Mister Wright” Free-Write)
I'll be honest: religion does not often feature prominently in my stories. I suppose because my own faith is very personal to me, something I don't always feel comfortable voicing in public. That makes me something of a coward, I guess, but I neither want to invite...
Clear as Crystal? Not quite. [Free write]
The knocks burst a staccato beat through the flat, startling on the first and annoying on every one to follow. Findlay Raske lurched up from the bed, snapping one drooping side of his pyjama bottoms back into proper place above his hip. “All right, all right,” he...
“The End” is only the Beginning
On Friday, May 9, 2014, I finished the last chapter of Fearless. 167,000+ words, two-and-a-half years, and countless dreams, tears, and laughs later, it's done. The first draft, that is. Which means it's really just the beginning. Now, the manuscript (holy $%*&, I...
“Stupid, Macho, and Wicked” [Another “Finding Mister Wright” Free-Write]
No one has told me to stop, so I'm still writing these extensions of my "Finding Mister Wright" story from this past winter break. Here's another one: "Stupid, Macho, and Wicked" (opens as a PDF in a new window; ~2600 words/10 pages long). Writing Marshall and the...
“Culture Gap” [Another “Finding Mister Wright” Free-Write Short Story]
A recent post by fellow blogger Vanessa J. Chapman about coriander/cilantro brought back this memory of cultural differences. Now, I like the leafy stuff, especially over curry or in guacamole, but head on over to Vanessa's post to get an opposing view. Whether you...
“All Yours” [A “Finding Mister Wright” Free Write]
I've been writing a lot of dark stuff, recently. So, at the end of a sunny, productive week at work, I just didn't want to venture back into that ugly universe of gunslingers and death-dealers. I wanted to do something light. As it turned out, something sappy, too,...
Brain Freeze [Free-write]
Just a bit of free writing on a Sunday morning, inspired by the following Tweet, from fellow writer Sally-Jayne: The tinny tune wafted on the night breeze, rippling over the burbling canal and along the street, bouncing from brick to brick down the row of...
