About the BonusParts

What are the BonusParts? In the simplest explanation, the BonusParts are Mayumi Hirtzel…everything beyond what you think you might already know about me.

I cut my writing teeth on what’s known as “fan fiction”: taking pre-existing worlds and characters, and creating my own personal universe of stories from that. My first attempts at storytelling – with the help of my sister, who filled the role of beloved mythology architect for our strange new worlds – revolved mostly around “Star Wars”, followed by “Transformers”, and “Jem”, and a mash-up of the worlds of “The Dark Crystal”, “Krull”, and an alternate universe of “The Avengers” where Captain America was a paladin and The Wasp was a fairy princess. Needless to say, I had an active imagination as a kid.

I still have an active imagination. And, I still write fan fiction, for those series I enjoy.

I also write my own original stories, many of which developed out of the frenetic burst of writing energy that is National Novel Writing Month, sometimes referred to as NaNoWriMo, or simply NaNo, for short. I’ve been an on-and-off participant in NaNo since 2005, when a journey to Japan rekindled my interest in my heritage, and that led to the tale of a family in feudal Japan, whose adventures are told through the eyes of the family cat. NaNo taught me the value of writing every day…and I’ve been writing every day since!

The blog is about my writing: fiction pieces, personal observations, and ramblings on what works and what doesn’t, at least for me. Hopefully, you will find something here that resonates with you!

As for updates, I do those when I can. That is a terrible incentive to keep readers around, but with so much going on both online and in my “real” life, some sacrifices must be made.

2016 Year in (Writing) Review

Whenever I feel like I haven't produced anything in a while, I look at what stories I've posted. 2016 might not have been my most prolific year, but I did write - and post - a little bit over 66,000 words, across 22 stories. I'm not including the work I did on the...

Nothing Special, But Why I Do It

A few years ago, we went to visit my in-laws. My mother-in-law, a professor at the time at a small, prestigious higher education institution, was talking about her students: young men and young women fortunate enough to be favored by talent as well as privilege. She...

NaNo 2016 Recap

Well, I didn't hit the 50K word count goal for NaNoWriMo 2016, but I wasn't planning on doing that. (I'm trying to remind myself that I didn't really "fail" this year's NaNoWriMo challenge, because my goals were different from the word count ones. It's kind of...

Once More Into the Breach

Yeah, I've decided to do NaNoWriMo again this year. But, this year, I'm participating as a NaNo Rebel. I got the idea - and the bug - from writer and editor Kate Johnston, aka 4amwriter (website and twitter), who talks more in-depth about the concept of how to be a...

Hope, courtesy of a birthday

I like birthdays. They are unique celebrations of an individual. Every other holiday and anniversary we share with one or more people, but a birthday is often for one person alone. Twins - or family or friends who otherwise share the same birthday - have a slightly...

Nev, revisited

One of my recent Timehop memories was a #TBT / #ThrowBackThursday to my very first 100 Word Challenge for Grown-Ups, from February 2012. At the time, I was deeply entrenched in writing the first draft of "Fearless," which remains one of my hope-for novels. (It's...
